What Activities Do I Lose Myself In?
Not many.
Most things don’t take me out of my head. They don’t go deep enough. They don’t hold me.
But there are a few.
Work does it. Real work. The kind where your hands are doing something that matters—fixing, building, figuring something out that doesn’t want to be figured out. Hours pass and you don’t notice. You’re not thinking about yourself. You’re just inside the process.
Writing does it too. Not the kind where you’re trying to sound right—but the kind where something real starts coming through and you’re just keeping up with it. That’s different. That’s not control. That’s translation.
Sometimes it’s music. When it hits the right way, it cuts everything else out. Not as an escape—but like it lines something up internally that was off.
And sometimes it’s problem-solving. When something’s broken—mechanically, mentally, structurally—and you lock into it until it makes sense. That space where nothing else exists until it’s solved.
That’s about it.
It’s not entertainment. It’s not distraction. I don’t lose myself in things that pull me away from reality.
I lose myself in things that pull me deeper into it.
